Jay

Thankfully, Felicity hadn’t done anything so rash as turn on the van’s radio. It probably hadn’t occurred to her. In fact, she hadn’t moved at all; she was still gazing listlessly out of the window. But he’d barely managed to put the drinks down when she suddenly sprang up and leapt out of the van. Swearing, he got out himself, but she wasn’t trying to run. ‘Tell me where Leo is, or I will start screaming,’ she said.

Jay glanced around. Though the car park wasn’t packed full, there were a lot of people who would hear if she started making noise – several people nearby were taking a break or eating inside their cars, and there were a few small groups making their way to and from the service station.

‘I mean it, Jay.’

He stood in front of her. Her eyes were fixed on him. But he wasn’t convinced she would really start screaming. ‘Go on, then,’ he said.

She wasn’t expecting that. She faltered. ‘Just tell me, Jay,’ she said desperately. ‘Tell me where he is. Tell me where he is!’ her voice was rising. ‘Tell me where he is, tell me where he is!’ She took a deep breath, as though she truly was about to start screaming. He couldn’t risk it. He clapped his hand across her mouth. ‘I told you, getting other people involved won’t help,’ he said into her ear. ‘I won’t tell the police where he is, so drawing attention to yourself will achieve nothing. But if you cooperate, I will tell you. Just not right now.’

She was making noises in her throat, and he took his hand away. She took another big breath, readying herself to scream. Jesus, what was wrong with her? He grabbed her arms and shook her. ‘Stop it! Fucking stop it,’ he hissed at her.

‘I’m not going to stop asking where he is until you give me an answer.’

‘Yes you are. You’re going to get back in the van, you’re going to sit down, and you’re going to shut up.’

‘No.’

‘Then I won’t ever tell you where Leo is. I’ll make sure you never set eyes on him again. Do you want that?’

Her eyes flashed with anger, but she didn’t reply.

‘Do you?’

Still nothing.

‘I said, do you want to never see Leo again? Answer me.’

‘No,’ she said finally.

‘Then do as I say. Everything will be fine if you do as I say. But if you start screaming, I will have to leave you here, and if I leave you here, you won’t get Leo.’

It was a lie, but she didn’t know that – she still believed Leo was in danger. Reluctantly, she made her way towards the van. She took the iced coffee from him without a word, and he started driving again, watching her out of the corner of his eye to see if she drank any of it. Just as he was beginning to lose hope, she took a sip, then another. He sighed inwardly with relief. Soon he wouldn’t have to worry about her.
